You no longer need to shop for computers; you can now do it yourself. Building your own computer can be fun as well as cheap. The good that comes with making your own computer is that you will do it exactly the way you want it to be, you can add features that lack in other ordinary PCs and better still, you can maintain it easily. However, before you get started, you need to bear certain things in mind;

  • Adequate knowledge in IT is basic.
  • Get to know some basic math
  • Get other sources for back up; reading materials, videos or advice from computer experts.
  • Learn more about electronic devices, how they work and all.

The first step towards carrying out such a project is assembling your tool; get enough components you will need to build your computer. Normally, it’s advisable to go for shop computer parts that are new. Resorting to second hand computer parts can be very risky at times.
For the hardware components you need;

  • A good computer case
  • A monitor with power supply
  • Motherboard
  • A computer cooling fan
  • Drives; floppy, hard and CD ROM
  • Mouse and keyboard
  • Cables
  • Processor, video and sound cards

Others include screws, power cord, drive cables and motherboard spacers

To build your own computer, you will need a series of connection to come up with a complete set. Therefore, you need to incorporate software components in the PC for the project to be considered complete. You need operating systems, system disks and device drivers that usually come with the hardware drives. Since we have gone more ‘digital’, you don’t need to buy the floppy disk drive.

The next step is installing all this components; clean the PC case, inspect power supply and switch, then install the feet. The case is inserted in two tabs that support it when placed on top of a desk. Next, work on the case fan. This is used to cool down your PC. Set it in such a way that it can take up air and release heat for effective functioning.

Incase they are sealed, free the drive bays in your computer. Drive bays come in metal or plastic forms. Incase you are working with the metal ones, be careful not to spoil the case or hurt yourself. The plastic bays are a lot easier to work with.

  Work on the motherboard; arrange the I/O (the input output system) to allow for easy connections of other peripheral equipments. After you are done, configure the motherboard to the case.
Prepare other hardware components such as the hard drives and configure; depending on the capacity you intend to install, configure them physically before installing them in the PC case. Work on the CD ROMs, mouse and keyboard.

Once you are done, test your new computer. Connect it to the power supply and get going. Press the reset button, reboot your PC and check whether the hard drive and case fans are spinning. With your hardware checked, install the operating system and you are ready to go.

The Santa Cruz Operation was founded in 1979 as a custom programming house. In 1984, it introduced SCO XENIX, its first operating system, which ran on the Apple Lisa, PC XT and the DEC Pro 350.

It later developed only for the Intel platform, and more than two million licenses of its Unix client and server products were sold. In 1995, SCO purchased UnixWare and all the AT&T source code for Unix System V from Novell. It merged UnixWare and its OpenServer product into a single operating system,
